Sewing Hope with Connect Community

This year’s Easter Offering will fund Home Sewing and Industrial Sewing classes for members of Baragumu, our African Fellowship worshiping community, and for others in the Gulfton/Sharpstown area.

The sewing classes will be offered as part of Connect Community’s workforce development program, HTX Sewn Goods, at their new Textile Lab & Entrepreneurship Center opening in April!

Home Sewing Class participants will receive 12 hours of instruction on developing skills for hobby sewing, home mending, and starting a small micro business. Industrial Sewing Class participants will receive 150 hours of instruction in industrial sewing skills, English language skills, and digital literacy that will equip them to pursue career opportunities such as operating webbing machines, sewing fiberglass for aerospace, and producing wearable products for the bio health industry.
Nadine

Your gift makes a life-changing impact

Nadine, a mother of five children under the age of 13, began her sewing journey in the home sewing class and later advanced to the industrial sewing class. Shortly after completing the program, Nadine welcomed her youngest son. As soon as she was ready to return to work, she utilized Connect’s on-site childcare and joined the HTX Sewn Goods production team.

Nadine hopes to go to fashion school and become her own designer. One day, she might even open up a shop in the micro retail space of Connect’s new Textile Lab & Entrepreneurship Center!

Inspired by Baragumu

Baragumu, our African Fellowship, began on our Gethsemane Campus in 2018. Baragumu members have endured indescribable hardships in Burundi, DR/Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda. Even so, they embody what it means to be the church—proclaiming the gospel with courage, persisting in hope, worshiping with joy, and caring for one another and the wider community in tangible acts of love.

Baragumu inspires and challenges us all with their faithfulness, resiliency, and joy. Let’s take up their witness this Easter, offering tangible love with transformational impact, that these families in our community might have access to ways of gaining financial stability and experiencing a future filled with hope.
