Luke 6:46–49
Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed, and its destruction was complete.”

Reflection:
Recently the house across the street from our home was sold. It didn’t take long for heavy equipment to arrive on the property in preparation for tearing down the house so a new, larger home could be built. Early one morning the excavator began to demolish the house and put it in the back of dump trucks. As I sat and watched from my front yard, I couldn’t help but think of the memories of the families that had lived there over the years. I’m always amazed at how long it takes to build a home on a strong foundation, but how quickly it can be torn down. This made me think of my own foundation and how I thank God for giving me strength in times of need.

Christ provides the foundation in all of our lives. He provides the cornerstone to assist us as we grow in our faith journey. Throughout our lives we grow, change and mature. But the one thing that doesn’t change is Christ’s love for us. Isn’t it a great feeling knowing that Christ’s foundation is at our very core and gives us a strong footing to build our lives?

In the scripture, Jesus says, “I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.” This is a great reminder of how much God loves us. No matter how far we wander from Christ, we were given a foundation of strength.

Our job is to take that foundation and build a life with Christ, not just for us but for our families also. When things are going well in our lives, we may not think about our foundation. But when a crisis comes into our lives, our foundations are tested. How strong is your foundation? It’s never too late to build on its strength.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the strength you have given us. Thank you for guiding us through this life as we build on your foundation. Lord, give us the strength and knowledge to come home to you when we wander. We are thankful for your blessing and love. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
