Hebrews 10:22-25
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Reflection:
The letter to the Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were undergoing fierce persecution by both the Jews and the Romans. He knew that they needed reassurance and encouragement to keep their faith in Jesus as they were waiting expectantly for his return. It is also an inspiration for us Christians to be confident, courageous, and uplifted in living out our faith. But it’s so much harder to do that alone.

The Greek term for not giving up meeting together is enkataleipontes, referring to “an abandonment, forsaking or neglect,” since it implies a failure to do something we ought to be doing. We have an obligation to fellowship with other Christians. It’s not only necessary for discipleship but so that we can meet each other’s needs. We need to encourage, inspire one another and, in my case, stay sane during the COVID quarantine.

This extrovert needs to be with people, so I signed up for multiple online studies and groups. And most of the time I show up. I show up because I need you beautiful people in the “Hollywood Squares” of the Zoom screen. I need to hear your voices. I need to pray with you and for you and have you pray for me. Together, we need to pray for our world. Together, we spur one another on to live and love like Jesus and serve our community.

Are you showing up? Maybe you didn’t do your homework or just aren’t in the mood. You might be “zoomed-out” for the day. Should you jump in anyway? Yes. Why? Because you just might hear answered prayers, see billboards of direction, learn a nuance of scripture for the first time, witness perseverance as you watch another navigate hard times. You might receive wisdom as someone shines a light on something you need to investigate. You may even have someone speak a prophetic word over your life that calls you to action.

So what do we do while we are home? We show up for church. We worship online. We try to engage fully, even though saying things out loud or singing sounds awkward. Remember this one thing and take it to heart: God thinks you sound marvelous! So, give God the glory and sing along. God deserves it and singing releases endorphins that lift your spirit.

Let’s celebrate being together online while we anxiously await rejoining in person to pray and worship, study the Bible, make friends, tell our stories, and give ourselves away in generosity and service.

Closing Prayer:
Father God, we love you. Thank you for the way you love us and lead us. Give us eyes of love for one another, ears to hear what you have for us, mouths to declare your praise and hands and feet to get after it! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
