Scripture Titus 3:4-7

4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6 This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life

Reflection:

Titus was a Gentile Christian who was a friend and coworker of the apostle Paul.  Titus was a good organizer that Paul depended upon to help spread the good news of Jesus (Titus 1: 5).  In this letter, Paul reminded Titus of how important it was to teach “sound doctrine.”  One of the emphasis of good teaching was the issue of salvation, being in a right relationship with God. This salvation comes, not through anything we humans do, but from the loving kindness and mercy of God as shown through the person of Jesus.   And this salvation is available to everyone (Titus 2:11)!  This was and still is good news!

In our world today, we, like Paul and Titus, experience quarreling, hatred and envy.  Yet, because of Jesus, there is also love, grace and hope.   We can respond to God’s greatest gift of Jesus by showing kindness and respect to everyone around us.   By living as a follower of Jesus, we can continue to spread this good news!

As we journey through this Advent Season together, may we grow closer to each other and to the One who came to earth, lived among us and showed us what God is like! This is the season in which God’s loving kindness appears for us and all just as it did so long ago.

Prayer:

Gracious God, I am so thankful for your presence in my life.  Guide me, I pray, to live each day in response to your great love.  Amen.
