What St. Luke’s Means to Us by Mark and Becky Kidd

I am from Wichita Falls, Texas and Becky is from Jennings, Louisiana. We were both raised as Methodists.  We met in Houston in 1977, where we happened to live in apartments next door to each other.    Soon after moving to Houston from UT Austin, I learned that Dr. Walter Underwood was the Senior Minister at St. Luke’s.  He was my pastor back home.  I had been friends with his son Wally.  My mother and Billie Underwood were friends.  My mother made sure that all of us “Kidd kids” were involved in every aspect of the church – Choir, Sunday School, MYF, Youth Musicals, Scouts. Naturally, I started attending St. Luke’s right away, and soon Becky and I started dating.  We were [...]

I Didn’t Really Have a Church Home by Rebecca Matthews

As the daughter of a Methodist preacher, I moved around a lot.  I didn’t really have a church home.  When my husband and I found St. Luke’s I felt so blessed to have found a community to surround not only our marriage but our growing family.  We joined a Sunday school class and met and came to know lifelong friends who supported us as we went through good times and bad.  Our children attended St. Luke’s Day School and I became very involved in the parent organization.  School book fairs and vacation bible school put my creative mind to work [...]

When I was in high school at Lamar from 1958-1961, I ended up becoming friends with a wonderful girl named Pam Fleming.  She was very popular and I was delighted that she was my friend because I was somewhat of a dork.  Some of the other cool kids at that time at Lamar were Susan Silvus, Nancy Hale (Cobb), Ken Jacobson, Alan Nash and Bill Denham!!  Pam shared that her dad (Dr. Durwood Fleming) had started St. Luke's and that they had a great Sunday evening gig for kids like us called MYF.   Two of the sponsors for our group [...]

What St. Luke’s Taught Me by Gene Graham

I joined St. Luke’s in 1983, when I moved back to Houston from New York City to continue my career in oil and gas finance and banking.  I am profoundly grateful for the life-changing, spiritual-awakening opportunities St. Luke’s has offered me and for the many life-long friendships that have grown out of the St. Luke’s family. My early life at St. Luke’s developed along two parallel tracks: administrative and teaching. In the late 1980’s, I was excited to join the church’s finance committee.  That first committee assignment began a long period of service on the finance and executive committees.  The [...]

Our Church is My Foundation by Steve Lufburrow

I had the privilege of growing up at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.  My family moved to Houston in 1965 when I was 6 years old.  My father was a Methodist Minister who had taken the job as President of Goodwill Houston through a special appointment from the Bishop, so finding the right church was important.  I have so many memories of those early days and all make me smile.  The only time we took a break from St Luke’s is when we moved from Afton Oaks to Kingwood and my dad volunteered to start [...]

Being in the SL “family” By Carol Mohrman

My St. Luke’s story goes back 65 years to August 21, 1955, the day I was baptized by Rev. Durwood Fleming in what is now Fellowship Hall (the original “temporary” Sanctuary). Of course, I have no memory of that day, but every time I am in Fellowship Hall, I think about how this was the spot where my SL journey began. My parents Ray and Camille Simpson were not founding members; they hadn’t even met yet in 1945, and didn’t marry until 1948. Because the SL congregation was still [...]

Grateful Every Day by Laurie Kereluk

My husband, Tom, and I were married in the chapel of St. Luke’s on June 25, 1977. We met in March 1975 at a St. Patrick’s Day party shortly after I moved to Houston from my small hometown of Sidney, Ohio. The week after I moved here, I received a call from my great-aunt, Ann Castle an active member of St. Luke’s inviting me to attend church with her.  I came the following Sunday and was particularly excited after hearing the choir. I met Bob and Barbara Bennett after the service and I joined the Chancel Choir the very [...]
