We Have Chosen to Be In This Place by Cynthia Wier

I remember the Sunday forty-five years ago that I became a member of St. Luke's.  We sat on the second row, and Dr. Shamblin asked for those who wanted to join to come forward.  Although I had grown up in the Presbyterian church in Waco, I was sure St. Luke's United Methodist was where I belonged.  I vowed to uphold the church with my prayers, presence, gifts and service.  After church I went into the chapel parlor and felt welcomed by Dr. and Mrs. Shamblin.  It was a special occasion. You see, there was a young man named Tom Wier [...]

Joseph Patty, Associate Director of Student Ministries  Acts 3:1-10 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get [...]

Chrissie Prichard, Member since 2007, Outreach Council member Acts 2:42-47 “The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers. A sense of awe came over everyone. God performed many wonders and signs through the apostles. All the believers were united and shared everything. They would sell pieces of property and possessions and distribute the proceeds to everyone who needed them. Every day, they met together in the temple and ate in their homes. They share food with gladness and simplicity. They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. [...]

Yes. You CAN handle the truth.

A PERSONAL PRAYER God, I’ve been looking again at how your son Jesus spoke to people. I’ve always been drawn to his words of kindness and grace. These are the words he spoke to the grieving, the poor, the outcast, the sinner. But I can’t deny that there are other times the words he spoke were harder to hear. These are the words he spoke to the religious folk of the day, the Pharisees and Sadducees, the Herodian leaders, the rich and the powerful, sometimes even to his own disciples. He called people hypocrites. He called them a [...]

Amy Kelley, Dir. of Program Ministries, Gethsemane Acts 2:14, 32-37 (CEB) 14 Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared… 32 “This Jesus God raised up. We are all witnesses to that fact. 33 He was exalted to God’s right side and received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit. He poured out this Spirit, and you are seeing and hearing the results of his having done so. 34 David didn’t ascend into heaven. Yet he says, The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right side, 35     until I make your enemies [...]

Linda Burch: Member since 1972, Good Will Class, former Stephen Minister  Acts 2:1-11 (NIV) 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in [...]

Joseph Patty, Associate Director of Student Ministry, Scavenger Hunt Designer Extraordinaire Acts 1:23-25 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias, so he was added to the eleven apostles. Acts 6:1-8 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained […] because their widows were [...]

St. Luke’s Church and Me by Ruth Blanton

2020-10-05T10:09:44-05:00October 5th, 2020|75, All blogs|0 Comments

I was made aware of St. Luke’s Church when I met Joe Blanton, my husband to be. The St. Luke’s family was holding services in the auditorium of Lamar Senior High School. On one of our dates, I accompanied Joe to Lamar High School where St. Luke’s was having a church conference and Joe was scheduled to attend. I met many new members of St. Luke’s who invited me to join. I attended Sunday services and later joined the St. Luke’s choir as a gift surprise to Joe’s parents. Some months later I joined St. Luke’s and Joe and I [...]
